Our Review Methodology
Transparency is the foundation of every recommendation we make. Here is exactly how we test, score, and rank tarot reading platforms — so you can trust our reviews as much as we trust our process.
Why Methodology Matters
The online tarot industry has grown rapidly, and with that growth has come a flood of review sites that rank platforms based on who pays the highest commission rather than who provides the best service. We founded Best Online Tarot because we believe readers deserve better than that. When you are trusting someone with personal questions about love, career, or life direction, you need to know the recommendation was earned — not purchased.
Our review methodology was developed by our editorial team to create a consistent, repeatable, and fair evaluation framework. Every platform we review goes through the same rigorous process, scored on the same criteria, by team members who have no knowledge of our commercial relationships with those platforms. The result is a ranking system you can actually rely on.
We publish this methodology in full because we believe accountability requires transparency. If you disagree with how we weight a factor or score a platform, you have all the information you need to adjust our ratings to match your own priorities.
The 4-Factor Scoring System
Every tarot reading platform receives a composite score from 1 to 5 based on four weighted factors. We chose these factors and their weights based on what matters most to the people who actually use these platforms. Reading quality carries the most weight because, ultimately, the accuracy and depth of the reading itself is the primary reason anyone visits a tarot platform in the first place.
1. Reading Quality — 40% Weight
Reading quality is the single most important factor in our scoring system, and it is also the hardest to measure objectively. To evaluate it fairly, we assess four distinct components across multiple reading sessions with different readers on each platform.
Accuracy and Insight: We evaluate whether the reader provides specific, relevant insights rather than generic statements that could apply to anyone. A high-scoring reader demonstrates genuine intuitive ability and connects their interpretation directly to the querent's situation. We test this by asking similar questions across platforms and comparing the depth and specificity of responses.
Depth of Interpretation: A quality tarot reading goes beyond surface-level card definitions. We look for readers who explore card relationships within the spread, discuss how reversed cards modify meaning, and provide layered interpretations that account for the querent's specific context. Readers who simply recite textbook meanings score lower than those who weave the cards into a coherent narrative.
Personalization:We assess whether the reader tailors their reading to the individual rather than delivering a one-size-fits-all interpretation. This includes asking thoughtful follow-up questions, referencing details the querent has shared, and providing actionable guidance that speaks to the person's unique circumstances.
Reader Skill Range: We do not judge a platform solely by its best reader. We test multiple readers at different price points and experience levels to gauge the overall quality of the platform's roster. A platform with consistently strong readers across the board scores higher than one with a few standout individuals and many mediocre options.
2. User Experience — 25% Weight
A great reading experience starts before the first card is drawn. The platform itself needs to be intuitive, well-designed, and free from friction that distracts from the reading. We evaluate user experience across three dimensions.
Platform Design: We assess the overall visual design, navigation structure, and information architecture. Can you easily find readers who specialize in your question type? Are reader profiles informative and honest? Is the reading interface clean and distraction-free? Platforms that feel cluttered, outdated, or confusing lose points here.
Ease of Booking: We evaluate the entire booking flow from creating an account to starting a reading. How many steps does it take? Are you required to add a payment method before browsing? Can you easily schedule a reading for later or only connect in real time? We favor platforms that minimize barriers between the user and the reading they came for.
Mobile Experience: More than 70% of tarot reading sessions happen on mobile devices, so we test every platform extensively on both iOS and Android. We check for responsive design, chat and video functionality on mobile, app stability, and whether the mobile experience matches the desktop experience in quality and features.
3. Value for Money — 20% Weight
Tarot readings are a personal investment, and we believe you deserve clear, upfront information about what you are paying. We do not simply favor the cheapest platforms — we evaluate whether the price reflects the quality of the experience.
Pricing Transparency: We check whether the platform clearly displays per-minute rates, any additional fees, and the total estimated cost of a reading before you commit. Hidden charges, unclear billing practices, or surprise upsells result in significant deductions.
Introductory Offers: Most platforms offer special pricing for new users. We evaluate the quality and fairness of these offers. Is the introductory rate genuinely useful (enough minutes for a real reading), or is it a teaser designed to get your payment information? We also check whether the transition from introductory to regular pricing is clearly communicated.
Per-Minute Rates:We compare rates across the platform's reader roster, noting both the range and the average. We also assess whether higher-priced readers deliver a correspondingly better experience, or whether the price difference is purely cosmetic.
4. Trust & Safety — 15% Weight
Trust is non-negotiable. A tarot reading involves sharing personal and often sensitive information, and the platform has a responsibility to protect that information and treat its users fairly.
Privacy Policies:We review each platform's privacy policy in detail, checking whether personal data is shared with third parties, how reading transcripts are stored and for how long, and what control users have over their data. Platforms that sell user data or lack clear privacy protections score poorly.
Refund Policies: We test refund processes by filing claims when appropriate, evaluating how easy it is to request a refund, how quickly refunds are processed, and whether the platform pushes back unfairly. A generous, clearly stated satisfaction guarantee is a strong positive signal.
Reader Vetting: We investigate how each platform screens and onboards its readers. What qualifications or testing does the platform require? How are underperforming readers handled? Platforms with rigorous vetting processes and ongoing quality monitoring score highest in this category.
Our Testing Process
Numbers and frameworks only matter if the underlying testing is thorough. Here is the step-by-step process our review team follows for every platform we evaluate.
Step 1: Account Creation and Setup
We begin by creating a standard account as a regular user — no press accounts, no special access, no VIP treatment. This ensures we experience the platform exactly as you would. We note the signup process, any required payment information, verification steps, and the overall first impression. We also review the platform's terms of service and privacy policy during this phase.
Step 2: Testing with Multiple Readers
We do not base our assessment on a single reading. For each platform, our team conducts sessions with at least four different readers, selected to represent a range of experience levels, specialties, and price points. This gives us a representative sample of what the platform actually delivers rather than a cherry-picked highlight reel.
Step 3: Testing Different Reading Types
Tarot reading encompasses a wide range of question types, and a platform may excel at one while falling short on another. We test each platform across multiple reading categories including general tarot spreads, love and relationship readings, career and finance guidance, and spiritual or personal growth questions. If you are interested in exploring different reading types yourself, our free tarot reading tool covers many of the same spread types we use in our testing.
Step 4: Evaluating Customer Support
We contact customer support on every platform we review, testing response times, helpfulness, and resolution quality. We submit routine inquiries (billing questions, reader recommendations) as well as more challenging requests (refund requests, account privacy concerns). A platform with responsive, empathetic support that resolves issues quickly earns a significant advantage in our scoring.
Step 5: Retesting Every 6 Months
Our reviews are not static. Platforms change — they add features, adjust pricing, onboard new readers, and update policies. To ensure our rankings reflect the current state of each platform, we retest every reviewed platform on a six-month cycle. If a platform has improved, its score goes up. If quality has declined, its score goes down. Our readers deserve recommendations based on what a platform is today, not what it was a year ago.
What We Do Not Do
Understanding what we refuse to do is just as important as understanding our process. These are the lines we will never cross.
No pay-for-play rankings. No platform can pay for a higher ranking, a more favorable review, or placement in our recommendations. Our scoring system is based entirely on the testing criteria described above. We have turned down significant offers from platforms seeking guaranteed placement, and we will continue to do so.
No sponsored reviews. Every review published on Best Online Tarot is written by our editorial team based on genuine first-hand testing. We do not accept pre-written reviews, sponsored content disguised as editorial, or payment in exchange for coverage of any kind.
No suppression of negative findings. If our testing reveals problems with a platform — poor reader quality, hidden fees, inadequate privacy protections — we report those findings honestly, regardless of any business relationship we may have with that platform. Honest criticism is what separates a genuine review from an advertisement.
No manipulation of user reviews. We never solicit, fabricate, or selectively display user reviews to create a misleading impression of any platform. When we reference community feedback, it reflects the genuine sentiment we have observed.
Editorial Independence
Best Online Tarot earns revenue through affiliate partnerships with some of the platforms we review. This is how we fund the site and keep all of our content — including our free tarot readings, our educational guides, and our reviews — freely available to everyone.
However, our editorial and business operations are entirely separate. The reviewers who test platforms and write reviews do not know which platforms we have affiliate relationships with, and they are never informed of or influenced by commercial considerations. Our editorial team has full authority over all published content, scores, and rankings.
We believe this separation is essential. Without it, the reviews would be worthless — and we would rather not publish reviews at all than publish compromised ones. For a complete explanation of our affiliate relationships and how we fund this site, please read our affiliate disclosure.
How Ratings Translate to Recommendations
After our testing is complete, we calculate a weighted composite score for each platform. Here is how those scores translate to the recommendations you see on our site.
4.5 – 5.0 (Exceptional): These are our top-tier recommendations — platforms that excel across all four evaluation factors. They offer consistently high-quality readings, an intuitive user experience, fair and transparent pricing, and strong privacy and refund protections. We confidently recommend these platforms to all users.
3.5 – 4.4 (Very Good): Platforms in this range are strong overall but may have weaknesses in one or two areas. They are worth considering, especially if their strengths align with your priorities. We include context in our reviews to help you decide whether a given platform's trade-offs work for your situation.
2.5 – 3.4 (Average): These platforms deliver an acceptable experience but do not distinguish themselves from the competition. We typically do not feature them prominently in our recommendations unless they serve a specific niche exceptionally well.
Below 2.5 (Not Recommended): Platforms scoring below 2.5 have significant issues that we believe make them unsuitable for recommendation. This could mean poor reading quality, deceptive pricing, inadequate privacy protections, or a combination of factors. We publish these reviews because knowing which platforms to avoid is just as valuable as knowing which ones to choose.
We encourage you to read our full platform reviews and rankings with this methodology in mind. Every score has a reason, and every reason is grounded in the testing process described on this page.
